Doctil®
(Cefuroxime) is a 2nd generation Cephalosporin antibiotic active against a wide
range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms including many
beta-lactamase producing strains. It is indicated for the treatment of
infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
Cefuroxime is indicated in-
■
Pharyngitis
■
Tonsillitis
■
Acute bacterial otitis media
■
Acute bacterial maxillary sinusitis
■ Lower repiratory tract infections including pneumonia
■ Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis &
secondary bacterial infections of acute bronchitis
■ Skin & skin structure infections
■ Urinary tract infection
■ Bone and joint infection
■ Uncomplicated & disseminated gonococcal infections
■ Septicemia
■ Meningitis and
■ Surgical Prophylaxis.
Generally
Cefuroxime is well tolerated, However few side effects like nausea, vomiting,
diarrhoea, abdominal discomfort or pain may occur. Besides these rarely
(0.2%)renal dysfunction, anaphylaxis, angioedema, pruritus, rash, serum
sickness and urticaria have been reported.
Prolonged
administration of Cefuroxime may result in evergrowth of non-susceptible
micro-organisms. If superinfection occurs during therapy, appropriate measures
should be taken. Cefuroxime should be given with caution to patients receiving
concurrent treatment with potent diuretics because these diuretics are
suspected of adversely affecting renal function.
Concomitant
administration of probenecid with Cefuroxime Axetil increases the area under
the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%. Drugs that reduce gastric
acidity may result in a lower bioavailability of Cefuroxime Axetil compared
with that of fasting state and tend to cancel the effect of postprandial
absorption.
Overdose of
Cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Serum
levels of Cefuroxime can be reduced by hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.
Store in a cool
and dry place, protected from light.
